Jehan Madhani is a South Asian–American writer and cartoonist for audiences big and small. She was the recipient of the Lee & Low 2020 New Voices Honor for an original picture book manuscript-- Eli and the Uncles, out now from Candlewick Press (get it at your local bookstore!). As a TV writer, she has been Emmy-nominated for her work on Karma’s World on Netflix. Her writing can be seen across a number of shows, including Deepa & Anoop, Lyla in the Loop, Get Rolling with Otis, and Dee & Friends in Oz, and on streamers and networks like Netflix, Nick Jr., PBS, Apple TV+.
She was a fellow in the inaugural classes of the Sesame Workshop Writers’ Room and the Muslim Public Affair Council's Children's Screenwriting Workshop. She's determined to write for audiences that don't always see themselves on screens, and to tell stories rooted in and celebrating our unique cultures. She's particularly excited about celebrating content for children that encourages them to think outside of the ideas of gender roles, family, and community that they might know best.
She lives in Brooklyn with a family of unappreciative cats whom she repatriated from her parents’ Houston, Texas garage.
She spends her free time... writing books for kids, but when she's not doing that, she draws comics at @jehancomic and talks about movies with her high school best friend. Actually, it's unclear if she actually has free time, but you can find out: For more information on her work, to contact her regarding employment opportunities, or to say hello, feel free to get in touch.
